Touch the Sky

By: Hillsong United

Verse 1

What fortune lies beyond the stars
Those dazzling heights too vast to climb
I got so high to fall so far
But I found heaven as love swept low

There are so many fortunes awaiting us in heaven, but no matter how far we travel, they remain out of reach. When we try to climb the mountain alone, we will always fall back down. We cannot get to the heights of Jesus on our own. That is why He came down and brought the Kingdom of God to us. We don't have to climb because Jesus humbled Himself enough to travel down. Therefore, we sing Emmanuel: 'God with us', because He's allowed earth to experience His presence.

Chorus

My heart beating, my soul breathing
I found my life when I laid it down
Upward falling, spirit soaring
I touch the sky when my knees hit the ground

All that we see, hear, breathe, touch, taste etc. is God's creation. YOU are God's creation. It says in Job 33:4, "the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life." Every beat of our heart is because of the work of His creation.

In Matthew 16:25 it says that "whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." This is the legitimate definition of surrender: laying down one's life for something/ someone else. We will find God in this position of surrender. Our spirits begin to sour and we lose control of our lives. It may feel like we are falling because we have no control, but we are falling UPWARD to Jesus. The way up to God is down on our knees.

Verse 2

What treasure waits within Your scars
The gift of freedom gold can't buy
I bought the world and sold my heart
You traded heaven to have me again

In Phillipians 3:8 it says, "indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain in Christ." Nothing can buy the freedom that God gives us. The Kingdom of God is so valuable that losing everything on earth, but gaining the Kingdom of God, is heck-a worth it. We must surrender our hearts to Him, and in return, we will receive the gift of freedom. Before we surrendered our lives to Christ, we bought the world for temporary happiness and joy, BUT He traded the one thing with real value (heaven) to have us again.

Find me here at Your feet again
Everything I am, reaching out, I surrender
Come sweep me up in Your love again
And my soul will dance
On the wings of forever

The phrase "find me here at Your feet again" references the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10: 38-42. Jesus came to Martha's home where Mary, Martha's sister, sat at Jesus's feet and listened to His teaching, "but Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to Him and said 'Lord do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?'"(v. 40). The Lord answered her by saying "you lost me in the middle of doing all these things for me." Martha was too busy serving Jesus in the wrong way by focusing on the good she could do for Him instead of being in awe of how gracious He is. Jesus just wants us to surrender ourselves at His feet and LISTEN to Him. Only after we surrender everything to Him can we truly be free. And boy, does freedom make us dance! Just like Psalm 30: 11-12 says: Jesus has "turned my mourning into joyful dancing." So now is our time for our soul to soar as our feet hit the ground.
