Reckless Love

By Cory Asbury

Verse 1

Before I spoke a word, You were singing over me

You have been so, so good to me

Before I took a breath, You breathed Your life in me

You have been so, so kind to me

Before we even knew how to speak or breathe, He was breathing His life into us. Psalm 139:4, says "even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it all together."The Lord already knew our plan before we were born, and it is such a good plan. Zephaniah 3:17 says, "He will rejoice over you with joyful songs." God doesn't just speak over us; He literally sings and rejoices over us. His singing represents His joy over our lives. Now try to reflect on your life: all of the good and all of the bad moments. Think about how God has NEVER let you down. Yes, there may be hard times, but through it all, He is still so good and so kind to us.

Overwhelming: A feeling of enormous empowerment. His love crashes over us like waves and consumes our lives.

Never-ending: His love is endless; no matter how bad we mess things up, He STILL loves us. He stops at nothing to have our hearts.

Reckless: His love abandons all bias and continues through our failures and sins. He loves without a fear of being hurt, and He continues to love despite not being loved in return. He loves without a care of being "safe." He shows us this primarily through His act on the cross. This sacrificial act put Him into harms way, yet He did it without hesitation. He is wild, insane- even CRAZY in the way that He chases and loves us. In Psalm 23:6, it says "Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. I'm back home in the house of God for the rest of my life."

Foe: (n.) An enemy or someone who is against.

There are countless stories in the Bible where someone was a foe of God. (Luke 9:1-22) One example is the story of Saul in the New Testament. Saul was a tax collector who threw men and women out of the churches and put them in prison. On the way to Damascus to persecute Christians, Jesus came to him asking, "Saul, Saul,  why are you persecuting me?" Jesus fought for Saul until he proclaimed Jesus as, "the Son of God!"(v.21) Wow. Breathtaking. He went from being a well- known persecutor of Christians to becoming a prominent evangelist during his life time. Furthermore, he wrote most of the New Testament. He fights for us until He finds us, but that does not mean we never feel worthless. We may feel worthless, but to Him, we are worth the ULTIMATE sacrifice. That ultimate sacrifice was the payment He made for us to be free from our sins.

He is so good and so kind to us even when we are not good or kind to Him.

Matthew 18:10-14 The Parable of the Lost Sheep:

In the same way that a shepherd will leave 99 sheep to find the one astray, Jesus (our shepherd) will leave 99 righteous followers to find the one lost soul. He had so much faith in the 99 and so much love for the one astray that He uses this reckless love to track down the lost soul . In verse 13, Jesus rejoices over the one lost sheep that was found.

In no way do we, as great sinners, deserve His mighty love. We did nothing to deserve His redemption. We are like dirty rags that He is willing to clean. He makes us new and uses us for His glory.

God will light up every dark place in our hearts and in our lives. He searches every dark corner and finds the shadows (sins) that need to be brought to light. In John 1:5, it says "the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it."

As we are climbing large mountains in our lives, God is not afraid to climb them with us and chase us down. Even if we feel like we are climbing this mountain alone, He is still behind us running after us with everything He has and is.

No matter what walls you are confined in (depression, anxiety, fear, impurity, pride, etc.) God has the power to kick them down. We may think that we can build walls between us and God, but He will kick them down every time.

When the world tries to tell you lies, God will tear those down. Jesus is the truth, and the truth is true ALL THE TIME.

Chorus

Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God

Oh, it chases me down, fights ‘til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine

I couldn’t earn it, I don’t deserve it, still You give Yourself away

Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God

Verse 2

When I was Your foe, still Your love fought for me

You have been so, so good to me

When I felt no worth, You paid it all for me

You have been so, so kind to me

Bridge

There’s no shadow You won’t light up

Mountain You won’t climb up

Coming after me

There’s no wall You won’t kick down

Lie You won’t tear down

Coming after me
